Prelude Voluntary on “Melita” by Charles Callahan

Welcome Rev. Kathryn Boren

Musical Response America the Beautiful

Scripture Matthew 11:16–19; 25–30 Melissa Colgin Abeln, flute

“But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another,

‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we waited, and you did not mourn.’

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’  Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.  All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Sermon Rev. Kathryn Boren

Prayers of the People Rev. Russ Hall

As God’s people, called to love one another, let us pray for the needs of the church, the whole human family, and all the world:

That spiritual communities may discover their unity and exercise their gifts in service of all, we pray to you, O God: Hear our prayer.

That you will strengthen this country to pursue just priorities so that the races may be reconciled, we pray to you, O God: Hear our prayer.

That you will comfort and empower those who face any difficulty, trial, or sickness, especially those whom we name in our hearts, we pray to you, O God: Hear our prayer.

That you will accept our thanksgiving for all the faithful now at rest, who, with us, await a new heaven and a new earth, we pray to you, O God: Hear our prayer.

We give thanks today for our country. May our common life be marked by honesty, responsible work, and compassion for those less fortunate, we pray to you, O God: Hear our prayer.

Merciful God, shape us, day by day, until we pray as continually as we breathe, through Jesus Christ and in the mystery of the Holy Spirt, we pray.  Amen.
